A THANKSGIVING TURKEY by Julian Scheer. Illustrated by Ronald Himler.
While definitely a picture book, A Thanksgiving Turkey by Julian Scheer is the story of the relationship between a thirteen-year-old boy and his grandfather. While good for the younger crowd, it is certainly applicable to an older audience.
Told in first person by the grandson, this beautiful coming of age story follows the move of the boy and his mother to the grandfather's farm in rural Virginia. There the boy learns to enjoy the rhythm of the farm work and time spent with his grandfather hunting. The grandfather is determined to get a wonderful turkey for Thanksgiving supper. Lots of lessons of patience and persistence occur as the turkey refuses to fall for their repeated attempts until one day. An opportunity arises for the boy and his grandfather, but something transpires at the end that causes a bit of a change of heart.
Beautifully illustrated in watercolors by Ronald Himler, A Thanksgiving Turkey is a true feast for the eyes!
