THIS PRESENT DARKNESS by Frank Peretti
The plot continues to thicken and the tension continues to rise, doesn't it? This week's reading really brought to light the fact that WE NEED A SAVIOR. We like to pretend that we can do a lot on our own power, but honestly we can only make it so far before we fall flat on our face. Of course, I am referring to what is happening to Susan, Marshall, and Hank. All three have found themselves wrapped up in situations that they need rescued from. One is on the cusp of losing her life, one is being drawn to the point where he will meet the Savior face to face and decide if he will choose to follow him, the third has been faithfully following the Lord, and the difficulties he is facing will most likely cause him to step even deeper into his relationship with Christ. Guys, there's no getting around the fact that tough things happen in life. Every one of us is probably facing a challenge of some sort. Some are facing harder challenges than others. I don't believe God causes those hardships to occur (often times, they are of our own making), but He will use hardships to draw us closer to Him. He alone can rescue us from the sin and fallen state that we find ourselves in. Romans 8:38-39 is a fitting verse for right here. "Neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present, nor the future, not any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord." Can I get an Amen? But we can't stop there. The hardships that Susan, Marshall, and Hank are facing are to bring them to Christ (or closer to Christ), but it's also to save an entire town. This plan, this working is much bigger than three people. Christ is in the personal day-to-day, but He's also in the big picture. He's into ETERNITY. These chapters showcased the taking down of Susan, Hank, and Marshall. Chapter 32 closes with Ashton being served up on a platter to the Strongman by Rafar. It's feeling like the darkness is overpowering the light. But I've got a feeling that a resurrection is on it's way!
