MOUNTAINS OF THE WORLD by Dieter Braun
Mountains of the World is a beautiful picture book overflowing with all kinds of information for young people. It contains your usual info on tallest and most well known mountains of the world, but then it dives in so much deeper! There are pictures and descriptions of all kinds of mountain related information such as types of climbing, animals, skiing, volcanos, waterfalls, ice, sacred mountains, etc, etc. If you have a young one that is asking lots of questions about mountains this will definitely feed their minds and their souls.
Be sure and read the author's note at the beginning of the book! He talks about his childhood, and a place in the neighborhood where the kids created "mountains." As a child my grandparents lived in Pennsylvania, so I had travelled through the mountains several times and knew what they looked like. However, I had never seen the Rocky Mountains. We had a small stretch of rocky, clay soil on the side of the hill, and my sister and I called it the Rocky Mountains. What a wonderful little spot we would cross as we played! When I was in high school my parents took us to the real Rocky Mountains. To this day I have a soft spot in my heart for "both" Rocky Mountains!
HEADS UP- This book does make references to evolution to answer how mountains were formed. It is a very small part of the book.
HOMESCHOOL HELPS- This book is a great stand alone book. It would also be wonderful in a mountain themed morning basket or alongside a countries of the world study.
