HUNTER'S CHOICE by Trent Reedy

Hunter Higgins is twelve-years-old. That means he's old enough to participate in the family's first hunting trip of the year now. Set in the woods of Idaho, Hunter's dad, grandfather, and uncle gather at their lodge all hoping to tag a trophy deer.

Unexpectedly, Hunter's cousin, Yumi, and her friend join in the hunt. At first, Hunter is bummed until he realizes the point is for Yumi to spend time with her dad, an Army vet recently home from his tour struggling with PTSD and guilt. Even with the girls there surely nothing could spoil this trip. That is until Hunter has his first chance at a beautiful buck, and he can't make himself pull the trigger. Hunter has hunting fever in his blood. What's the matter with him? Nothing is, and when the trip takes a turn for the worse and lives are at stake, Hunter will have a chance to prove it.

Overall, this is an engaging story with some great action! It definitely kept my attention throughout the story. If you have middle graders that are into hunting, this will be a great read.

HEADS UP- There are a couple of references to casual alcohol drinking among the adults. Hunter and Yumi's friend develop a bit of a crush on each other. It only develops into cloaked comments, red cheeks, etc.

Sharing stories, building faith, and growing together, one book at a time.
