THE HOUSE SAPHIR by Marissa Meyer

THIS IS A DNF FOR ME.

I'm going to start off by saying that there have been several books by Marissa Meyer that my girls have enjoyed. The House SAPHIR, a retelling of the French folktale Bluebeard, definitely took us into a very dark and creepy place that we had not experienced with her in her previous books.

The story opens with meeting Mallory Fontaine, a descendant from a line of witches who has more con artist than witch in her at the beginning. She can see and speak to ghosts, and her current means of making money is giving tours in the deserted, run down house of Count Bastien SAPHIR, a man who was married three times and known to have killed all three of his wives. Mistakenly, Mallory and her sister, Anais, (also a witch) bring back Count Bastien's spirit from the dead, and he immediately takes over his old home ushering in a new season of terror. He accomplishes this by bringing several supernatural monsters with him and possessing his living heir, Count Armand who he then controls to carry out his twisted plans. The young count reaches out to Mallory hoping that she has the ability to free them all from the grip of Count Bastien. This book plunges headfirst into the dark side with topics such as possession, creepy rituals, seances, and more which is why it's a DNF for me.
